An Analytical Study of the Cultural Values of the Bun Bang Fai Festival in Phon Subdistrict, Kham Muang District, Kalasin

Abstract

This thesis has three objectives: 1) to study the concepts and theories of traditional values; 2) to study the Bun Bang Fai tradition in Phon Sub-district, Kham Muang District, Kalasin Province; and 3) to analyze the values of the Bun Bang Fai tradition in Phon Sub-district, Kham Muang District, Kalasin Province. This study employed a qualitative research methodology, comprising documentary research and field data collection through in-depth interviews. Key informants were selected using purposive sampling, totaling 15 individuals. The data were analyzed through analytical description based on the research conceptual framework, which examines the values of the tradition across five dimensions-namely, psychological/spiritual value, economic value, social value, local political and administrative value, and the value of tradition and cultural transmission-with each dimension considered through three levels of value: intrinsic value, social value, and universal value. The findings revealed the following 1) Tradition is defined as a pattern of behavior that a group of people in society upholds and transmits from generation to generation, thereby becoming a cultural heritage. Value, on the other hand, refers to what human beings and society regard as desirable and use as a criterion for determining behavior and ways of life. Values can be classified into three levels: intrinsic value, social value, and universal value. 2) The Bun Bang Fai tradition of Phon Sub-district, also known as Bun Bang Fai Praewa, constitutes a distinctive cultural heritage of the Phu Thai ethnic group, integrating traditional beliefs with the indigenous wisdom of Praewa silk weaving, which serves as the economic and social heart of the community. This tradition has evolved from a rain-invoking ritual associated with the belief in Phaya Thaen (the Rain Deity) into a component of Buddhist merit-making traditions, and has since been elevated to a form of creative cultural capital, in which Praewa silk functions as a medium expressing the community's identity in the present day. 3) The values of the tradition were found to encompass three levels, each of which is expressed through five dimensions—namely, psychological/spiritual, economic, social, local political and administrative, and the transmission of tradition and culture—as follows: (1) Intrinsic value: The tradition serves as a spiritual anchor and a source of faith; generates occupations and income for rocket-makers; functions as a mechanism for fostering community solidarity; cultivates leadership and collective decision-making skills; and serves as a repository of the Phu Thai people's wisdom, language, and lam phaya (traditional oral poetry). (2) Social value: The tradition creates shared experiences and fosters positive relationships among community members; promotes cooperation and income distribution; strengthens intergenerational bonds; encourages participation and collaboration among organizations; and functions as a mechanism for transmitting knowledge from one generation to the next. (3) Universal value: The tradition reflects the relationship between human beings and nature; holds potential for further development into cultural tourism; reflects coexistence grounded in mutual respect and diversity; reflects the community's role in self-management; and underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage in contemporary society. Notably, all three groups of key informants expressed consistent views, indicating that these values genuinely exist and are firmly rooted in the community's way of life.

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง "ศึกษาวิเคราะห์คุณค่าประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ ตำบลโพน อำเภอคำม่วง จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์" มีวัตถุประสงค์ 3 ประการ คือ 1) เพื่อศึกษาแนวคิดทฤษฎีคุณค่าประเพณี 2) เพื่อศึกษาประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ ตำบลโพน อำเภอคำม่วง จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ และ 3) เพื่อวิเคราะห์คุณค่าประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ ตำบลโพน อำเภอคำม่วง จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ การวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพศึกษาจากเอกสาร (Documentary Research)และเก็บข้อมูลภาคสนามด้วยการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In-depth Interview) จากผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ ด้วยวิธีการคัดเลือกแบบเจาะจง (Purposive Sampling) จำนวน 15 รูป/คน วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยวิธีการพรรณนาเชิงวิเคราะห์ตามกรอบแนวคิดการวิจัย คือ คุณค่าของประเพณี 5 ด้าน ด้านจิตใจ ด้านเศรษฐกิจ ด้านสังคม ด้านการเมืองการปกครองท้องถิ่น และด้านการสืบทอดประเพณีและวัฒนธรรม ในแต่ละด้านพิจารณาผ่านคุณค่า 3 ระดับ คือ คุณค่าในตนเอง คุณค่าทางสังคม และคุณค่าสากล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1) แนวคิดทฤษฎีคุณค่าประเพณี ประเพณีเป็นแบบแผนความประพฤติที่กลุ่มชนในสังคมยึดถือและสืบทอดต่อกันมาจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นจนเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรม ส่วนคุณค่าเป็นสิ่งที่มนุษย์และสังคมเห็นว่าพึงปรารถนาและใช้เป็นเกณฑ์กำหนดพฤติกรรมและการดำเนินชีวิต ซึ่งจำแนกได้ 3 ระดับ ได้แก่ คุณค่าในตนเอง คุณค่าทางสังคม และคุณค่าสากล 2) ประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ ตำบลโพน หรือที่รู้จักในนาม บุญบั้งไฟแพรวา เป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมที่มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ผู้ไทย ซึ่งบูรณาการความเชื่อดั้งเดิมเข้ากับภูมิปัญญาการทอผ้าไหมแพรวาอันเป็นหัวใจทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของชุมชน ประเพณีนี้มีพัฒนาการจากพิธีกรรมขอฝนตามความเชื่อเรื่องพญาแถน สู่การเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของบุญประเพณีทางพระพุทธศาสนา และยกระดับสู่การเป็นทุนทางวัฒนธรรมเชิงสร้างสรรค์ที่ใช้ผ้าไหมแพรวาเป็นสื่อแสดงอัตลักษณ์ของชุมชนในปัจจุบัน 3) คุณค่าประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ ตำบลโพน อำเภอคำม่วง จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ ปรากฏครอบคลุมคุณค่า 3 ระดับ ในแต่ละระดับแสดงออกผ่านคุณค่าทั้ง 5 ด้าน ได้แก่ จิตใจ เศรษฐกิจ สังคม การเมืองการปกครองท้องถิ่น และการสืบทอดประเพณีและวัฒนธรรม ดังนี้ (1) คุณค่าในตนเอง เป็นที่ยึดเหนี่ยวจิตใจและสร้างศรัทธา ก่อให้เกิดอาชีพและรายได้แก่ช่างทำบั้งไฟ เป็นกลไกสร้างความสามัคคีในชุมชน บ่มเพาะผู้นำและฝึกการตัดสินใจร่วมกัน และเป็นแหล่งรวบรวมภูมิปัญญา ภาษา และลำผญาของชาวผู้ไทย (2) คุณค่าทางสังคม สร้างประสบการณ์และความสัมพันธ์อันดีระหว่างสมาชิก ส่งเสริมความร่วมมือและการกระจายรายได้ เชื่อมความสัมพันธ์ข้ามรุ่น ส่งเสริมการมีส่วนร่วมและความร่วมมือระหว่างองค์กร และเป็นกลไกถ่ายทอดองค์ความรู้จากรุ่นสู่รุ่น (3) คุณค่าสากล สะท้อนความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างมนุษย์กับธรรมชาติ มีศักยภาพต่อยอดสู่การท่องเที่ยวเชิงวัฒนธรรม สะท้อนการอยู่ร่วมกันบนพื้นฐานความเคารพและความหลากหลาย สะท้อนบทบาทการจัดการตนเองของชุมชน และสะท้อนความสำคัญของการอนุรักษ์มรดกทางวัฒนธรรมในสังคมร่วมสมัย ทั้งนี้ ผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญทั้งสามกลุ่มมีความเห็นสอดคล้องกัน สะท้อนว่าคุณค่าเหล่านี้ดำรงอยู่จริงและมีรากฐานมั่นคงในวิถีชีวิตของชุมชน
